Description

Eagle Pommel Non-Regulation Imported US Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword

American Civil War

29.5" quill back spear point single edged blade, 1.1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 35.5". 6" hilt with cast brass guard and large, spread-winged Eagle pommel cap. Grooved wooden grip covered in shagreen with 13 wraps of twisted wire. Blade unmarked as to maker or retailers, etched with flowing foliate and martial themes. The sword is accompanied by a brass mounted, bottom seamed leather scabbard. Although unmarked the sword is definitely an import, likely by Clauberg, based upon the style of eagle on the pommel cap. A very nice example of a rare non-standard, higher end 1850 Foot Officer's Sword.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Condition
Very good. Blade with some polish and frosty appearance to the etching, showing scattered oxidized discoloration and freckling. Cutting edge with a couple of nicks and chips. Blade to hilt junction tight. Grip with moderate wear and some loss to the wrap. Wire somewhat loose. Scabbard with moderate wear, significant crazing and areas of weakness. A major crease about 6.5" above the drag is very weak. There is a small hole in that area as well. Throat is loose. Scabbard is about .5" too short for the sword to completely seat in it.
